Amethyst in Mythology

Item# GMT-AMTHMYTH

Product Description

In Greek mythology, a woman named Amethyst was walking to worship at the shrine of Diana. Unfortunately she met the god Bacchus, who was very angry because of an insult. In his anger he had decreed that the first person he met would be eaten by tigers. As the tigers leapt, Diana turned Amethyst into a beautiful clear crystal. Shaken and remorseful, Bacchus poured the juice of his grapes over the transformed Amethyst, giving this crystal its distinctive purple color. The word "amethyst" comes from a Greek word which means "not drunken."
